Scott Firman, who's already been twice named an All-American for his on-field performance this season, picked up another All-America nod on Thursday, this time for his success both on and off the field.
Firman was selected as a Senior CLASS Award Second Team All-American. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Â
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Firman is one-of-10 student-athletes selected as a Senior CLASS Award All-American. The first team was comprised of Maryland's Isaiah Davis-Allen, High Point's Michael LeClair, Brown's Dylan Molloy, Notre Dame's Sergio Perkovic and Yale's Eric Scott. The second team featured Christian Burgdorf and Connor Cannizzaro of Denver, North Carolina's Austin Pifani and Marist's J.D. Recor in addition to Firman.
Firman, who was elected a team captain this season by his teammates, earned his degree in marketing management at the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at commencement this month and will next pursue a career in the medical field. Firman was recently admitted to the University of Vermont's Post Baccalaureate Premedical Program, where he will begin pursuit of a medical degree and career.
Named a First Team All-American by Inside Lacrosse before garnering second team honors from the USILA's All-America teams, Firman also earned All-ACC honors in 2017 while serving as the team's top cover defenseman. He held the opponents top attackman to nearly a full point below their season average in games against the Orange. He also played in key role in Syracuse posting its best clearing percentage in program history (.919) and allowing just 10.06 goals against.
He also excelled in the classroom at Syracuse, most recently placing third in the Whitman School's Senior Capstone. His group – which featured teammates Joe DeMarco and Ben Williams – used the fall semester to develop a revolutionary product in the lacrosse industry, presented their business plan to peers, school faculty and potential investors and took third of 73 groups for their work.
Â
Last summer, he interned with SFP Capital LLC, a venture capitalist firm which invested in multiple startup companies in Baltimore, Maryland.
Â
A Fayetteville, N.Y. native who attended Jamesville-DeWitt High School, Firman has also worked in numerous volunteer roles in the community. He volunteered at Upstate Medical University, assisting in all areas of the hospital. He assisted visitors, delivered blood labs and assisted with patient discharges among other tasks. His most recent assignment has him in the emergency room.
Â
In 2016, Firman volunteered at Francis House Hospice Care, where he assisted in everyday needs of the residents while assisting in meal preparation, housekeeping and other chores in addition to visiting with the residents to provide companionship.
Â
Firman has also been a leader among athletes at SU, having served as a Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Orientation Leader in 2015 and coordinating a Make-A-Wish Foundation wish fulfillment in 2014. In that experience, Firman was a wish granter who fulfilled a 12-year-old boy's wish of shopping and spending the day with the men's lacrosse team a week prior to his open heart surgery.
This is the third consecutive year a member of the Orange has been named a Senior CLASS Award All-American, with Dylan Donahue earning second team honors in 2016 and Kevin Rice being named a first team selection in 2015. Prior the that, John Galloway (2011), Matt Abbott (2009), Mike Leveille (2008) had earned first team honors, while Greg Rommel was named to the second team in 2007 as the first SU player to receive the honor. Leveille is the only player in program history to earn the Senior CLASS Award itself, receiving the honor the same year he claimed the Tewaaraton Award in 2008.
