The Syracuse Department of Athletics is committed to ensuring its student-athletes' success, not only during their time on campus, but in life. The S-Project was created with this purpose in mind.
Â
The S-Project mission is to educate student-athletes in areas that will improve their quality of life; engage with Syracuse University departments and local organizations; develop leaders on the field, in the classroom and in the community; empower student-athletes to take ownership in their education and career goals; to graduate student-athletes who are entering professions they are excited about; and to inspire student-athletes to believe in themselves and go for the great.
Â
The four focus areas of the S-Project are career readiness, financial education, healthy relationships and wellness, and personal development.
Â
"The S-Project is a complete team effort from the Athletics Department," said Tommy Powell, assistant provost for student-athlete academic development. "The S-Project is not just one person's brainchild. It's the entire Athletics' (department) brainchild to make sure we're doing right by our student-athletes while they are here."
Â
Some of the S-Project programs offered to student-athletes in 2016-17 included a presentation by a sports psychologist, a career fair, a presentation on empowering female student-athletes, a self-defense class and a presentation on investment strategies.
Â
For Jake Leahy, a redshirt freshman on the men's soccer squad, these programs fill the gap between what the student-athletes are learning in the classroom and from the respective sports.
Â
"Going to these S-Projects really helps with opening our minds to some of the things that you need to develop as student-athletes that you might not get elsewhere."
