Third-Straight Shutout Allows 'Cuse to Sweep Road Trip

The No. 5 Syracuse field hockey team (3-0) completed the sweep of their three-game west coast road trip to start the year with a X-X win over UC Davis (0-2). The defensive unit again led the way as 'Cuse has yet to allow a goal on the year in 210 minutes of action.
The scoreless streak is tied for the seventh-longest in program history, is just the 11th time since 1978 that Syracuse has shut its opponent out in three-straight contests, with 1986 serving as the only other season which that came in the first-three games of the year.
On the offensive side of the field, Lies Lagerweij opened the scoring up in the first half off an assist from Jennifer Bleakney with 21 minutes remaining in the first half. Freshman Sarah Luby then got into the mix with her first collegiate goal seven minutes later. That tally gave the Orange a 2-0 lead heading into the locker room.
Emma Tufts then capped off the scoring when she finished a feed from Carolin Hoffmann with under two minutes remaining in regulation to provide another 3-0 win for the Orange.
Borg van der Velde played the first half, with Emma Likly seeing her first collegiate action for the second 35 minutes. The pair preserved the third-straight clean sheet for 'Cuse.
Next, Syracuse will square off with Bucknell on Saturday in the home opener. That game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, with Ohio visiting J.S. Coyne Stadium the following afternoon at 2 p.m.
