SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A memorial patch honoring legendary coach Dick MacPherson will be worn by the 2017 Syracuse University football team and displayed on the Carrier Dome field throughout the season. The blue patch with 'Mac' inscribed in orange will be sewn on the Syracuse jerseys and on the Carrier Dome turf to celebrate his life and as a testament to the man who passed away on August 8, 2017 at 86 years old.
Â
"Our University community will remember Coach Mac forever," said Director of Athletics John Wildhack. "His legacy will live on in every person who had the opportunity to meet him or be in his presence. The patch on our uniforms and on the Carrier Dome field is a tribute to the lasting impact he had on Syracuse University."
Â
A College Football Hall of Famer, leader, athlete, community activist, and extraordinary coach, 'Coach Mac' resurrected the Syracuse University football program as he breathed athleticism, enthusiasm, dedication, and charisma into the athletes, staff, and administration. His vibrant and unforgettable persona left an everlasting impact on Syracuse University, the football program, and the greater city of Syracuse.
Â
He arrived at Syracuse in 1981 and built the football program into a national championship contender during his tenure. His teams produced a 66-46-4 (.586) record, including a 3-0-1 mark in bowl competition, and were ranked as high as fourth in the national polls.
Â
MacPherson guided the second unbeaten squad in program history – the 1987 team posted an unblemished 11-0 regular-season record and tied Auburn 16-16 in the Sugar Bowl. He was the consensus pick for national coach of the year that season, earning the recognition from 12 different groups including the American Football Coaches Association, the Football Writers Association of America, and the NCAA.
Â
In his final five seasons with the Orange, MacPherson coached Syracuse to a 36-10-3 record.
Â
After the 1990 season, MacPherson was named head coach of the NFL New England Patriots.
Â
He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009.
