NEW YORK – Syracuse midfielder Mo Adams has agreed to a Generation adidas contract offer from Major League Soccer (MLS). Adams will forego his final two years of college eligibility and enter the 2018 MLS SuperDraft, which is set for Friday, Jan. 19 in Philadelphia.
Â
"I am very excited for Mo and his family as he takes the next step towards fulfilling his dream of competing as a professional soccer player," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "Mo has the drive, passion and determination to succeed at the next level. We will all be cheering him on here at Syracuse and we wish him the very best as he prepares himself for the 2018 MLS SuperDraft."
Â
Adams, Nottingham, England native, has been a two-year starter for the Orange in the midfield. He was voted to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Second Team in 2017 after starting all 16 matches in which he played. Adams was named to the Watch List for the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy, which goes to the top collegiate player in the nation.
Â
Last season, Adams was selected to the All-South Region Second Team and the All-ACC Third Team. In addition, he earned ACC All-Freshman Team honors. Adams started all 19 matches in which he played and recorded his first career goal at Hartford. Adams, a member of the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, was also honored for his work in the classroom as a member of the ACC All-Academic Team.
Â
It marks the fourth consecutive season that a member of the Orange has signed a Generation adidas contract. Goalkeeper Alex Bono entered the MLS SuperDraft after the 2014 season and was the No. 6 overall pick by Toronto FC. Midfielder Julian Buescher was a member of the 2015 Generation adidas class. He was the 11th pick in the draft by DC United. Last season, Miles Robinson became the highest MLS draft pick in program history when he was selected as the No. 2 overall pick by Atlanta United, becoming the franchise's first-ever draft pick.Â
Â
Generation adidas is a joint program between MLS and adidas in which a handful of the top collegiate underclassmen and select youth national team players are signed to MLS contracts and made available in the SuperDraft. Generation adidas players do not count against an MLS team's salary budget.
Â
Adams is one of six players to agree to a Generation adidas deal this year, joining Michigan's Francis Atuahene, Akron's Joao Moutinho, Wake Forest's Ema Twumasi, Indiana's Mason Toye and Maryland's Gordon Wild.
