LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sophomore Tajon Buchanan scored a pair of goals to lead No. 24 Syracuse in its 2-2 tie at No. 11 Louisville on Friday, Oct. 12. The match featured two top 10 teams in this week's NCAA RPI – the No. 6 Cardinals and No. 7 Orange.
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Buchanan started the scoring in the 16th minute. Senior Hugo Delhommelle slipped a pass through to Buchanan, who tucked his shot into the bottom corner of the net to give Syracuse (6-4-2, 1-3-1) the lead. He added to the advantage in the 33rd minute when he got past two defenders and blasted his shot past Louisville goalkeeper Jake Gelnovatch.
Â
The Cardinals (7-2-3, 3-1-2) scored their first goal on a set piece as Tate Schmitt found the back of the net on a corner kick in the 42nd minute to cut the lead to 2-1. Another corner kick led to Louisville's second goal in the 57th minute as the Orange were called for a hand ball in the box. Adam Wilson converted the penalty kick for the equalizer. Neither team could find the back of the net for the remainder of regulation, sending the match to overtime.
Â
Both squads had chances in the first extra session. Syracuse senior Jonathan Hagman hit the post with his shot in the 98th minute, and the Cardinals nearly connected on a corner kick in the 100th minute, but the ball went out of bounds off a Louisville player as the teams were still tied after 100 minutes of play. Neither put a shot on goal in the second overtime as the match ended in a 2-2 tie, marking the second tie between the teams in the last four meetings.
Â
"It was a weird finish to the game as both teams were probably a little disappointed to get just a point out of the game," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "I thought we were excellent in the first half. We took our chances, we were dynamic. But give credit to Louisville. The goal they scored at the end of the first half gave them momentum, and it was a game of momentum swings. We started the second half a bit sluggish. But I'm proud of the way we hung in there. After they scored the second goal, it would have been easy for us to concede a third. We found our rhythm in overtime and created some chances. This has been a tough place for us to play and to get a point on the road in the ACC is a good thing."
Â
OF NOTE
Buchanan recorded his second multiple-goal match of the season. With his performance, he took over as Syracuse's leader in points, with a career-high 14, and goals with 5.

UP NEXT
The Orange return to the SU Soccer Stadium for its final non-conference game of the year on Tuesday, Oct. 16 against St. Bonaventure. Start time is set for 7 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
