SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A 30-kill performance from freshman Polina Shemanova was unable to help push the Syracuse volleyball team past Florida State Sunday afternoon. Shemanova became the first Syracuse freshman to record 30 or more kills and the third player all-time. Her 30 kills were just four shy of the school single-match record, and the most for any Syracuse player since 2006.
The narrow 3-2 loss was just the second of ACC play for the Orange this season. Syracuse (10-6, 6-2 ACC) was defeated by set scores of 25-23, 26-24, 16-25, 18-25, 12-15.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Florida State (11-7, 7-1 ACC) opened the first set with an early 11-9 lead. The Orange countered with a 4-0 run moving ahead 13-11, eventually taking a 19-18 lead. Taryn Knuth snuck a kill past Syracuse's blockers tying the set at 20-20 before back-to-back kills from Shemanova and Ella Saada gave the Orange a two-point, 22-20, lead. Jalissa Trotter used her first point of the match to close out the set following a pair of kills from Santita Ebangwese.
In a second set that featured six ties, Syracuse took a 12-7 lead on a 7-1 run that included seven errors from the Seminoles. Four consecutive points out of a timeout gave the Orange their largest lead of the set, 17-10. Florida State cut the deficit to two, 21-19, using a late 5-1 run but were unable to sneak past the Orange.
After hitting .109 in the second set, Florida State responded with a .360 hitting percentage in sets three and four. Syracuse looked to respond in the fifth set keeping the match knotted at 5-5. A pair of Syracuse attack errors were enough to help the Seminoles grab an 8-5 lead they wouldn't relinquish. Kills from Shemanova and Yuliia Yastrub helped the Orange remain within reach but Syracuse found themselves unable to cut the deficit to less than two.
OF NOTE
Following her career-high 57 assist performance Friday, Trotter recorded 56 assists against the Seminoles. Additionally, the senior put up 10 digs and five kills while Amber Witherspoon put up a match-high seven blocks.
