
Syracuse Downs NC State, Moves to 8-2 in the ACC

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- A 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon over NC State moved the Syracuse University volleyball team to 8-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The eight wins through the first 10 matches of ACC conference play are a program best.
Polina Shemanova recorded a game-high 21 kills marking her ninth game of the season with 20 or more. As a freshman, her kills have led Syracuse in 17 of 18 games thus far. She added 15 digs to help the Orange win by set scores of 25-9, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse (12-6, 8-2 ACC) opened the match with a 10-0 run behind Jalissa Trotter's serve. The Orange never trailed and cruised to a 25-9 win. 'Cuse was led by Ella Saada and Shemanova who each had four kills helping the Orange to a .542 hitting percentage with 14 kills on 24 attempts. NC State (10-10, 4-6 ACC) was plagued by errors for a -0.30 clip in the opening frame.
The Wolfpack led early, 6-4, in the second set before taking its largest lead of the match, 15-9. The Orange responded with a 6-2 run, bringing the score within two at 17-16. Shemanova had three-straight kills late in the match to make it 24-22, but the Pack held on to tie the match 1-1. The pair of Jade Parchment and Teni Sopitan put up seven kills each for NC State.
The two teams exchanged blows in the third set until Syracuse broke through for a 13-9 lead. Back-to-back kills from Saada made it 22-16 giving the Orange their largest lead of the set. 'Cuse maintained its lead and held on for the third set victory.
The Orange began the fourth set on a 6-0 run but NC State slowly chipped away to bring the set within one at 15-14. Syracuse scored four-straight points to extend its lead to 19-14 capping the run with a block by Christina Oyawale and Trotter. NC State evaded match point on three straight rallies pulling within one, 24-23, before a ball handling error by the Wolfpack dealt Syracuse its 25th point. Syracuse had six blocks in the final set and was led by Yuliia Yastrub who had her hands on four of them.
OF NOTE
Trotter had a team-best 40 assists, her seventh 40-plus assist match of the season. With 14 team blocks, Santita Ebangwese led the way with a game-high eight followed by Yastrub's six. Ebangwese added eight kills and four digs with a .438 hitting percentage.
