SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse women's soccer team's season came to an end Thursday night inside SU Soccer Stadium, as the Orange suffered a 3-0 setback against Clemson in the final match of the year.Â
The Orange finish the campaign 3-15-0 overall, including a 0-10-0 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play.Â
"It hasn't been the season that we all anticipated or wanted," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "It's very, very difficult to compete at this level with the amount of injuries we've had on a consistent basis, but our players never gave anything less than hard work."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Clemson jumped all over Syracuse in the first 10 minutes of play. The Tigers' Mariana Speckmaier headed Sam Staab's corner into the back of the goal in the seventh minute, giving Clemson an early 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, Clemson struck again. Brooke Power's goal in the ninth minute extended the lead to 2-0.
Syracuse's defense stepped up after that, holding off Clemson throughout the remainder of the first half and through the majority of the second half. The strong play of the defense kept the match tight, but Syracuse's offense could not fully break through.
Alana Hockenfull scored Clemson's third and final goal in the 87th minute to secure the 3-0 victory.
OF NOTE
The Orange tallied four shots, three of which were on goal. Redshirt freshman defender/midfielder Laurel Ness had two shots, including one on goal, and junior defender Taylor Bennett and freshman forward Meghan Root had one shot on goal each.
Harris played all 90 minutes in goal and tallied a match-high nine saves. She has at least four saves in eight of her last 10 starts.
HEAR MORE FROM COACH WHEDDON
"The team next year is going to have a lot of depth. Right now, there's nine players who'll be coming in, and they feature some outstanding players, which will add to the depth of the team. We've got to get our players healthy, we've got to get our players strong. That takes time in the offseason, so hopefully, the team continues to develop, and the players will be stronger next year."
