SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Redshirt junior Elijah Hughes led Syracuse with 21 points and five rebounds in an 89-52 victory against Le Moyne in an exhibition game at the Carrier Dome on Wednesday night.
Hughes, who had 16 of his 21 points in the first half, was 7-of-9 from the field, including two three-point field goals, and was 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
Sophomore Oshae Brissett (14 points), junior Tyus Battle (13 pts) and freshman Buddy Boeheim (13 pts) also scored in double figures. Sophomore Marek Dolezaj added nine points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists. Syracuse led 50-30 at the half and won the game, 89-52.
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Orange trailed 9-2 in the first three and a half minutes after Le Moyne's Tyree Chambers hit two three-point field goals and C.J. Asuncion-Byrd made a third trey. Syracuse then outscored the Dolphins 11-2 in the next five minutes to take the lead, 13-11, with 11:29 remaining in the first half. Sophomore Oshae Brissett paced the Orange with six points during the run and scored 12 points in the opening period. Hughes led all scorers in the first half with 16 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field, including a 3-pointer, and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
Â
In the second half, Syracuse's lead ballooned to 42 twice. Sophomore Bourama Sidibe hit a layup to make the score 84-42 with 5:31 remaining in the game, and then freshman Robert Braswell scored on a layup with 3:36 left to play to make the score 86-44.
COACH BOEHEIM'S THOUGHTS
"I think this was a really good outing for us. We learned early right away that we weren't moving; we were standing defensively and they made three-straight threes. That's a good lesson for us to learn, that's why these games are important. I think Le Moyne is very well coached. Patrick [Beilein] has done a really good job over there changing the whole team. They have really good patience and move the ball well."
