The Syracuse University volleyball team puts its undefeated Atlantic Coast Conference record on the line this weekend with a challenging road test against No. 8 Pittsburgh and Virginia. Syracuse (8-4, 4-0 ACC) takes on Pittsburgh, who also holds a 4-0 ACC record, Friday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. The Orange close out the weekend Oct. 7 against Virginia at 1 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast live on ACCN Extra.
Â
THE OPPONENTS
Pittsburgh (15-0, 4-0 ACC) enters the weekend as one of two remaining undefeated teams in the country. The Panthers' 15-0 start is the best in school-history and the longest win streak for the team since 1987. With two top-25 wins this season, Pittsburgh has cruised through the opening of conference play. The Panthers swept their first three ACC opponents and dropped just one set to Florida State.
Â
Virginia (4-10, 0-4 ACC) enters the weekend still in search of its first conference win. The Cavaliers opened ACC play at Pittsburgh before being swept by Virginia Tech and Florida State. Virginia fell to Miami,3-1, last weekend after taking a second set victory. Syracuse remains undefeated (5-0) against Virginia as a member of the ACC.
Â
BLOCKERS GAME
The Orange's blockers lead the ACC, averaging 2.93 blocks per set, a mark that ranks eighth nationally. Amber Witherspoon and Santita Ebangwese lead the way as both rank among the top-six in the ACC. Witherspoon ranks 23rd nationally with 1.4 blocks per set.
Â
ACC ACTION
Following last weekend's pair of wins, Syracuse moves to 4-0 in conference play for the first time in ACC history. The Orange join Pittsburgh and No. 25 Louisville as the only remaining teams undefeated in conference action. Â Â
Â
Against conference opponents, Syracuse has recorded a league-high 3.40 blocks per set. The defensive efforts have held opponents to a .176 hitting percentage, the second lowest in the ACC.
Â
UP NEXT
Syracuse returns home Oct. 12 to host Miami at 7 p.m. The Orange welcome Florida State to the Women's Building Oct. 14 at 4 p.m. Both games are free admission and will be broadcast live on ACCN Extra.
