SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The storied rivalry between two of Eastern football's top programs continues this weekend when Syracuse (4-1, 1-1 ACC) and cross-divisional foe Pittsburgh (2-3, 1-1 ACC) meet for the 74th time. Kickoff is set for 12:20 p.m. at Heinz Field and the contest will be televised on Raycom Sports.
Syracuse is coming off its first loss of the season, a 27-23 setback at No. 3 Clemson. Pittsburgh has lost two straight road games, including a 45-14 decision at No. 13 UCF in its most recent outing.
SERIES HISTORY
The Syracuse-Pittsburgh series, which began in 1916, has been contested annually since 1955. In that time, the two schools have played 73 times with Pitt holding a 38-32-3 series lead. The Panthers are 21-11 against the Orange at home.
Syracuse claimed last year's meeting at the Carrier Dome, 27-24. Quarterback Eric Dungey accounted for 413 yards of total offense in the game, throwing for 365 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also added a rushing score.
The last time Syracuse and Pitt played at Heinz Field in 2016 it was one for the record books. The teams combined for 137 points (Pitt - 76, Syracuse - 61), the most ever scored in an FBS regulation game. Their 20 combined touchdowns (Pitt - 11, Syracuse - 9) is also an FBS record.
ON THE MAP
Thanks to a 4-1 start, Syracuse is on the cusp of its first top-25 ranking since 2001. The Orange garnered 74 points in this week's Associated Press Poll and 48 points in the Amway Coaches rankings.
It's the third straight week Syracuse has received votes in both polls. Prior to Sept. 16, the Orange hadn't received an AP vote since Oct. 23, 2011.
REMEMBER THE NAME
Saturday's contest marks the third time Dungey will face Pittsburgh. The veteran signal-caller has had his way against the Panthers' defense in his two prior meetings, generating a combined 661 total yards of offense and four passing touchdowns. As a freshman in 2015, Dungey threw for 210 yards and two TDs, in addition to his statistics from last year's pairing.
Dungey enters this weekend's contest as one of two active FBS quarterbacks with more than 7,000 career passing yards and 1,000 career rushing yards. His 293.2 career yards of total offense per game is fourth among active players.
This season, Dungey has been responsible for 15 Orange touchdowns, including six on the ground, a mark which is tied for third in the ACC.
NO FLY ZONE
The Orange's eight interceptions rank seventh nationally and are tied with Boston College for the lead in the ACC. The play of the secondary has spurred Syracuse to a 8 turnover margin for the year, and the Orange offense has turned the miscues into 47 points.
True freshman safety Andre Cisco has done the heavy lifting with his nation-leading four interceptions. He's also tied for 20th nationally in passes defended with 1.5 per game, leading all FBS freshmen with seven total (4 INT, 3 PBU).
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Pittsburgh's rushing attack has been its best weapon through five game this season. Running back Qadree Ollison leads the way, averaging nearly six yards per carry and rushing for 404 yards and four touchdowns. In his career against Syracuse (two games), Ollison has run for 131 yards and three TDs.
Sophomore Kenny Pickett took over as the primary signal-caller this season. He's thrown for 743 yards and five touchdowns in his first year as the starter.
The Panthers have four wideouts with 10 catches this year, led by receivers Maurice Ffrench's 14 receptions. Receiver Taysir Mack is the Panthers' big play threat, accounting for 265 receiving yards on 12 catches (22.1 avg.).
Defensively, linebackers Quintin Wirginis, Oluwaseum Idowu, and defensive lineman Rashad Weaver all have at least five tackles for loss and 20 total tackles. Wirginis leads the club with 33 tackles and six TFLs.
