SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse scored the only goal it would need in the 65th minute as it upset No. 1-ranked and previously undefeated Wake Forest, 2-0, in men's soccer action at the SU Soccer Stadium. Freshman Hilli Goldhar put the Orange ahead with his second goal of the year, and senior goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert made five saves for his second shutout of the season.
"I'm delighted for the guys," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "At the end of the day, it's three points (in the ACC standings), but for the guys and the crowd, it certainly was a special night. But it's three points – a very important three points because we've played some really good teams and this was another one. For the last few weeks I've said we have some really good players. Tonight I can say we have a really good team."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Orange (5-4-1, 1-3) controlled much of the first half, recording four shots to just one for the Demon Deacons (11-1, 4-1). Syracuse's best scoring chance came in the 18th minute when sophomore Tajon Buchanan's shot from the right side went off the cross bar. The ball deflected to freshman Ryan Raposo, who put his shot on goal, but Wake Forest goalkeeper Andreu Cases Mundet made his only save of the night on the play.
The Demon Deacons came out more organized after intermission, and nearly took the lead in the 56th minute on Bruno Lapa's shot, but Hilpert made a diving stab to knock the ball over the cross bar and keep Wake Forest off the scoreboard.
The Orange broke through less than 10 minutes later. Raposo got around two defenders and played the ball through to Goldhar, who took one touch and then chipped his shot over Cases Mundet to put Syracuse on top, 1-0.
A red card at the 67:06 mark forced Syracuse to play a man down, but Wake Forest couldn't take advantage. Junior John-Austin Ricks added an insurance goal in the 84th minute when he stole the ball in the Orange offensive end and scored with the left foot from the top of the box for his first goal of the year.
OF NOTE
The win was the second in program history against the No. 1 team in the nation. The first came in 2000 when Syracuse defeated Connecticut, 1-0, in Storrs on Oct. 14.
The match was played in front of a crowd of 1,957. That total is the 10th-largest in SU Soccer Stadium history.
Wake Forest's last ACC loss on the road was at Clemson in September 2016. The loss snaps the Demon Deacons' undefeated streak against ACC opponents (23 games) and on the road (12 games).
Hilpert recorded a clean sheet against the Demon Deacons for the second straight year. Wake Forest entered the match as the highest scoring offense in the nation with 34 goals.
