SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A season-high 24 points from junior guard Tyus Battle led the Syracuse basketball team past Colgate, 77-56, Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome. The Orange earned a 53rd consecutive victory over the Raiders, the longest active winning streak in the Division I ranks.
Battle was nearly perfect on the night with an 8-of-10 (.800) shooting performance including a spotless 3-of-3 mark from three-point range. His 24 points came in just 26 minutes.
Sophomore forward Oshae Brissett and redshirt junior forward Elijah Hughes both added 17 points while sophomore center Bourama Sidibe was the fourth Orange player to reach double-digits with 11. Nine of Sidibe's points came in the first-half while his game-high 10 rebounds pushed him to his second career double-double.
COACH BOEHEIM SAID
"It was good to have Frank (Howard) back. He made a couple really smart plays to start the second half. He got the ball back to Elijah and gave it to Tyus, and we got a couple of threes because of it."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Colgate opened the second half going 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and knotting the game tied at 43-43. A three-pointer from Hughes triggered a 22-3 Orange run that secured a lead. Battle contributed 10 points in the stretch that lasted just over four minutes.
The Orange shot a second-half season-high 14-of-26 (.538) from the field, including 5-of-10 (.500) from three-point.
TIGHT FIRST HALF
The first half featured five lead changes and seven ties. Colgate's Will Rayman contributed seven of the Raiders opening 10 points. Hughes and Brissett hit back-to-back baskets, tying the game early, 10-10. Colgate responded with its third and fourth 3-pointers of the night to push ahead, 16-12. The Raiders grabbed their largest lead of the night at 19-14 on 3-pointer from Tucker Richardson. Back-to-back steals and baskets by Syracuse's Marek Dolezaj and Sidibe tied the contest for a fifth time at 21-21.
A pair of threes moved Colgate back to a four-point lead before Hughes retaliated with a basket that kick-started a 10-0 Syracuse surge that gave the Orange a 35-29 lead. Colgate ended the half on a three to hold 'Cuse's lead to 35-32.
HOWARD'S HIGHLIGHTS
Senior guard Frank Howard made his season debut for the Orange. After missing the first four games of the campaign with a lower leg injury he suffered during the preseason, Howard was in the starting lineup. He made his first attempt from the field, a 3-pointer, and finished with a game-high five assists and three steals in 19 minutes.
