Orange Trio Honored as Preseason All-Americans
12/17/2018 4:44:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
A trio of Orange standouts earned Preseason All-America honors from Inside Lacrosse.
Redshirt junior defenseman Nick Mellen headlined the unit, earning second team honors, while redshirt sophomore LSM Brett Kennedy and junior midfielder Jamie Trimboli were named as honorable mentions. Notre Dame (four) is the only ACC program with more honorees to the squad than Syracuse's three.
Mellen, who has been one of the top cover defenders in the nation in his time with the Orange, started every game last season, drawing the opponent's top attackman. He earned Inside Lacrosse and USILA All-America honors last season after leading the team with 22 caused turnovers in 2018.
The Syracuse, N.Y. native faced five of the nation's top-11 scorers last season in seven contests (facing Cornell's Jeff Teat and Virginia's Michael Kraus twice each). His combined 15 opponents averaged 4.19 points per game when they weren't facing Syracuse and just 3.33 in games when Mellen was on the defensive assignment.
Mellen will anchor a defensive unit in 2019 that returns all-five close defenders who played in every game, plus its top options at LSM.
Trimboli was a USILA Honorable Mention All-American last season after serving as the elder statesman of a young first-line midfield. Trimboli finished third on the Orange with 21 goals, leading all midfielders. He also added 10 assists for 31 points.
Kennedy – who earned All-ACC honors in his first season of action after missing his entire true freshman season due to injury – led all Orange field players with 42 ground balls. He also caused nine turnovers and scored a pair of goals in Syracuse's win over Virginia.
2019 Syracuse men's lacrosse tickets are now on sale. At just $65 for adults and $35 for youth (12 and under) fans can purchase season tickets. Season tickets are in the reserved section behind the Orange bench and come with other benefits during the season which are exclusive to season ticket holders.
Individual game tickets are also available at $15 for adults and $10 for youth. 'Cuse gets its 2019 season underway on Feb. 8 vs. Colgate.
