SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse softball head coach Shannon Doepking has announced the addition of two student-athletes for the 2019-20 season. A pair of west coast natives, Mia Cunnings and Kaia Oliver, are set to join the Orange next season.
Mia Cunnings
Carlsbad, Calif.
San Marcos High School
Infield
Cunnings joins Syracuse after helping San Marcos compile a 53-12 record over the last three years. San Marcos won the San Diego Section Open Division championship for the second time in three years and was named State Champion and Softball Team of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports. The team earned a No. 1 ranking by FloSoftball, naming them national champions.
A three-year player for San Marcos, she hit .404 in her junior season with 36 hits, 17 runs scored and 17 runs batted in. Entering her senior season, she is hitting .360 in her high school career.
"Mia is going to be a great addition to the Syracuse softball family," Doepking said. "She is a middle infielder who can really play anywhere on the field and play it really well. She's a player who understands our vision of this program and we know she will not only add value to our team on the field, but also off the field."
Kaia Oliver
Ridgefield, Wash.
Ridgefield HS
Pitcher
Oliver has been a dominant pitcher in the circle helping Ridgefield to back-to-back league co-championships in 2017 and 2018. A two-time Columbian All-Region pitcher, she was honored in 2017 as the Max Preps Player of the Year and Greater Saint Helens League Player of the Year. With a career ERA of 1.19, Oliver led her team to a 21-4 record in her junior season, striking out 198 batters in 115 innings pitched.
An accomplished pitcher, Oliver also contributes consistency at the plate with a .346 career batting average. She is a two-year team captain at Ridgefield as well as a two-year letterwinner in basketball.
"I'm really excited to add Kaia to the Syracuse softball family," head coach Shannon Doepking said. "She throws the ball hard and has a good blend of pitches that really complement each other. I think Kaia is not only an extremely talented pitcher, but a great person who truly bleeds Orange."
