Syracuse-Cornell Hoop Rivalry Adds A Boeheim In 2018
5/17/2018 1:59:00 PM | Men's Basketball
When Syracuse opened its most recent season against Cornell, the contest featured Orange mentor Jim Boeheim coaching against a Big Red squad that featured his son, Jimmy. Another Boeheim will enter the competition in 2018 when freshman Buddy Boeheim joins Syracuse's roster. The Orange and Big Red are scheduled to meet December 1 in the Carrier Dome.
Syracuse has a 92-31 advantage in the series with Cornell and the Orange have captured the most recent 38 pairings. The Syracuse-Cornell matchup is the second-most frequent in Orange history, just behind the meetings between Syracuse and Colgate.
The Big Red were 12-16 overall and 6-8 in the Ivy League last season, Coach Brian Earl's second at the helm. Matt Morgan (22.5 ppg.), a guard, led the Ivy League in scoring for the third consecutive season. He has entered his name into the NBA draft but has not signed with an agent and could return for his senior campaign. Forward Stone Gettings (16.7 ppg., 6.6 rpg.) is back on the Cornell roster for his fourth season. Jimmy Boeheim played in 26-of-28 games and averaged 3.2 points in his rookie campaign with the Big Red.
Syracuse was 23-14 and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 before a loss to Duke ended its 2017-18 campaign.
Boeheim, who ranks second in career wins among Division I mentors, is preparing for his 43rd season as Syracuse head coach.
