CHESTER, Pa. – Former Syracuse goalkeeper Alex Bono earned his first cap for the U.S. Men's National Team on Monday, recording a clean sheet in the squad's 3-0 friendly win over Bolivia at Talen Energy Stadium.
Bono played all 90 minutes behind a team primarily composed of players with European clubs, including Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund) and Weston McKennie (Schalke 04). Bolivia had five shots, none of which were on target, but Bono did make five recoveries and caught a cross. He also made 10 successful passes out of the box.
"It is the dream of every young player to one day have the opportunity to represent their country. There is no higher honor in sport and we are extremely proud of Alex," said Orange head coach Ian McIntyre.
Bono, a native of nearby Baldwinsville, N.Y., started 59 matches in three seasons (2012-14) at Syracuse. He posted a 39-17-3 record, including 30 shutouts. Bono guided the team to two NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearances. In 2014, he earned NSCAA All-America First Team honors and was named one of the three finalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy, presented to college soccer's player of the year.
The 2015 'Cuse Awards Male Athlete of the Year, Bono was selected sixth overall in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC. Bono holds a record of 29-11-12 in 52 professional matches with 15 clean sheets. In 2017, Bono made 72 saves and posted a 19-4-6, including 10 shutouts, to lead Toronto FC to the MLS title.
Monday was Bono's fourth call up to the full national team, but it was the 24-year-old's first game action with the senior national squad.
