The Orange were 23-14 a season ago and advanced to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 before having its season end against Duke. Syracuse returns all five starters from that postseason contest, including guard Tyus Battle, who announced Wednesday he was withdrawing from the NBA Draft and returning for his junior season.
Syracuse's Jim Boeheim, the second winningest coach in NCAA Division I history, is preparing for his 43rd season as head coach at his alma mater.
Ohio State was 25-9 and an NCAA Tournament participant last winter, Chris Holtmann's first as head coach. Holtmann was the 2018 Big Ten Coach of the Year after guiding the Buckeyes to a 15-3 league mark.
Forward Keita Bates-Diop, who led Ohio State in scoring (19.8 ppg.) and rebounding averages (8.7 rpg.) entered his name into the 2018 NBA Draft. He was the 2018 Big Ten Player of the Year. The Buckeyes do return guard C.J. Jackson (12.6 ppg.), who will be a senior.
Ohio State has won five of the seven meetings with Syracuse. The two teams most recently met in the 2012 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 and the Buckeyes prevailed, 77-70.
