GREENSBORO, N.C. (theacc.com) – Junior Bryce Holmgren and sophomore Alexa Romero have each earned a spot on the 2018 All-ACC Softball Team, announced Tuesday by the Atlantic Coast Conference. Holmgren was selected to the first team and Romero received second team honors.
Holmgren and Romero each make the All-ACC Team for the first time in their respective careers, and join a group of six other players to receive the accolade. Last season, Romero became the first Syracuse softball player to make the ACC All-Freshman Team.
An outfielder from Roland, Iowa, Holmgren finished the regular season as the ACC's leader in batting average (.412) and on-base percentage (.547). She also leads the Orange in hits (56), RBI (33), walks (25), hit-by-pitches (18) and is tied for first with 12 doubles. Earlier this season, Holmgren set a program record after reaching base in 46 consecutive game, shattering the previous record by 14. She is currently riding a 22-game reached base streak.
Holmgren has recorded 15 multi-hit games in 2018, which includes a four-hit performance versus Grand Canyon and three outings with three hits. She's drove in multiple runs in 10 games, with a four-RBI game against Yale and two games with three RBI. Holmgren has started in all 99 games during her time at Syracuse and is the program's all-time leader in career batting average (.381).
Holmgren was named the College Sports Madness ACC Player of the Week on Feb. 27 after going 7-for-14 with three doubles, six RBI and three runs over a five-game stretch.
A pitcher from Aurora, Colo., Romero is the ACC's leader in strikeouts (260) and strikeouts per seven innings (10.9). She finished the regular season with a 17-12 record and a 1.76 ERA in 166.2 innings pitched. Romero also tossed 14 complete games, with five shutouts.
Romero threw Syracuse softball's second-ever perfect game, and its first since 2000, in an 8-0 victory in five innings over Sacramento State. She also tossed a pair of no-hitters against Virginia Tech and Virginia to become the first pitcher in program history to throw three no-hitters in a single season.
A three-time ACC Pitcher of the Week, in addition to being named the Fastpitch News NCAA Div. I Co-Player of the Week and the College Sports Madness ACC Player of the Week, Romero set a career-high with 16 strikeouts in a victory over NC State. She's recorded double-digit strikeout totals 12 times and struck out 10 or more in four of her last five appearances.
