BROOKLYN, NY -- Demetris Nichols, who hit any number of 3-pointers during his Syracuse tenure, drained a baseline jumper to provide Boeheim's Army with a 60-55 victory against Team Fancy in the TBT Tournament on Sunday.Â
Nichols finished with a game-best 13 points and had seven rebounds for Boeheim's Army. Eric Devendorf had 12 points and John Gillon, who had 32 points the previous night, finished with 12 points and six assists. Arinze Onuaku had nine points and six boards and Hakim Warrick, the oldest member of Boeheim's Army at 36 years of age, contributed eight points and five rebounds.
The game was decided in an "Elam Ending." With four minutes to go, the score of the team ahead has seven points added to it to come up with the "Elam Ending" total. In this format, with the total set at 60 points, the first team to reach that total advances. With Boeheim's Army clinging to a 57-55 advantage, Gillon dribbled off two screens, penetrated the lane and when the Team Fancy defense moved to help, Gillon found Nichols for the game-winner.
Team Fancy had a 15-10 advantage after the first period. Boeheim's Army rallied and led by one at the intermission and at the end of the third quarter.
Boeheim's Army employed the 2-3 zone most of its members played while at Syracuse. In the end, Boeheim's Army limited Team Fancy to 19-of-58 from the field (.328), including a 7-of-30 mark on 3-point attempts (.233).
Boeheim's Army, the top seed in the Northeast Region bracket of the TBT, moves on to Atlanta where it will play Amored Athlete next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at Georgia State University and will be televised by ESPN. The winner will advance to the Final Eight.
