Boeheim's Army Loses On Golden Eagle 3-Ball

ATLANTA, GA -- Boeheim's Army saw its run in The Basketball Tournament (TBT) end in the final eight with a loss to the Golden Eagles, 90-86, at Georgia State. Travis Diener hit a long 3-pointer to clinch the victory for the squad made up of Marquette alumni.
Boeheim's Army made a dramatic, second-half comeback, after trailing by 15 points. Warrick, the oldest member of Boeheim's Army at 36 years, keyed the charge and finished with a game-high 24 points. He was 8-of-9 from the field, including a handful of dramatic dunks, and 8-of-9 from the foul line. Eric Devendorf added 17 points and Demetris Nichols contributed 14.
The game entered the "Elam Ending" with the Golden Eagles ahead, 83-80, which created a target score of 90. Warrick took a charge at the defensive end and Nichols converted one of two free throws to pull Boeheim's Army within two, 83-81. A basket from Elgin Cook was quickly answered by two free throws from Brandon Triche and The Golden Eagles led, 85-83.Â
Cook helped push the lead to four with two free throws. Boeheim's Army turned again to Warrick who scored and was fouled. His free throw put Boeheim's Army one point away, 87-86. Needing a 3-pointer to clinch the victory, the Golden Eagles misfired on their first two tries. Deiner then dribbled off a screen a converted the game winner.
Boeheim's Army jumped out to an early advantage in the game and led 25-19 after one period. The Golden Eagles shot their way back into the lead, canning 8-of-11 3-point attempts and outscoring Boeheim's Army 29-12 in the second period.
Trailing by 15 with 7:04 left in the third quarter, Boeheim's Army rallied behind Warrick, who scored 20-of-his-24 points after the intermission. Coach Ryan Blackwell instructed his squad to attack the basket on offense and the move paid off. The Golden Eagles eventually had two key players foul out -- Jerel McNeil and Jamil Wilson.
Boeheim's Army got back into the contest with a remarkable effort from the free-throw line, hitting 30-of-33 (.909) and outscoring the Golden Eagles by 26. Triche made all 10 of his free-throw attempts.
The Golden Eagles employed the 3-pointer as its main offensive weapon, hitting 20 long balls during the course of the contest. The Golden Eagles were 20-of-37 (.540) on 3-point attempts.Â
