SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University's field hockey team improved to 2-0 with a 1-0 victory over No. 21 Albany (0-1) on Sunday afternoon. The 11th-ranked Orange successfully killed five Great Danes' penalty corners in the final 20 seconds of play to secure their first shutout of the season.
The two battled to a 0-0 stalemate in the first half with Albany maintaining possession for much of the first 35 minutes in Syracuse's defensive zone. Goalkeeper Borg van der Velde faced five shots and made a pair of saves the keep the Danes off the board.
"Once we figured some things out in the second half we were able to make some adjustments," head coach Ange Bradley said. "We were able to open them up; it takes a while to figure those puzzles out."
Roos Weers scored the eventual game-winner off a set piece at the beginning of the second half giving the Orange a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute. Tess Queen stopped the ball from Carolin Hoffman's corner insertion setting Weers up at the top of the key for her second assist in as many games.
Albany out-shot Syracuse 10-7, which included a 5-0 advantage in the first half. The Great Danes had 13 penalty corners, five of which took place in the final 20 seconds of the game including four after time had expired.
Syracuse improves to 14-1 all-time against Albany and is 10-0 against the Great Danes at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
The Orange have a week to prepare for their first road test of the season, a cross-country road trip to face No. 15 Stanford at 9 p.m. EST on Saturday, Sept. 1.
