NEW ORLEANS – Syracuse senior quarterback Eric Dungey has been selected as one of the Manning Award's eight "Stars of the Week" for his performance at Western Michigan last Friday. Dungey set a school quarterback record with 200 yards rushing and a touchdown in the Orange's 55-42, season-opening victory against the Broncos. He also passed for 184 yards and two scores.
Â
The honor is the latest for Dungey, who earlier Tuesday was selected as the ACC Quarterback of the Week.
Â
College football fans can visit the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page now to vote for who they think had the best performance this past weekend. When voting closes at noon Thursday, the top vote-getter will be announced as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week.
Â
In addition to Dungey, Will Grier (West Virginia), Dwayne Haskins (Ohio State), Cole McDonald (Hawaii), McKenzie Milton (UCF), Steven Montez (Colorado), Brett Rypien (Boise State) and Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama) are under consideration for this week's Manning honor.
Â
Against Western Michigan, Dungey's shattered the previous Syracuse record for quarterback yardage of 156 shared by Bill Hurley and Terrel Hunt. Dungey averaged 13.3 yards a carry on 15 attempts and scored a 27-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter that put the game away.
Â
The 6-2, 226-pound senior now ranks third in the Orange career record book for most rushing yards by a quarterback (1,439), trailing only Hurley (2,551) and Donovan McNabb (1,561).
Â
All 55 of Syracuse's points against the Broncos came while Dungey was in the game, as the Orange scored on 9-of-11 offensive possessions with him at the helm. According to ESPN, Dungey's 96.1 total QBR rating was the third-highest in the nation during Week 1 of the college football season.
Â
Dungey and the Orange return home this week to host Wagner on Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Carrier Dome. Kickoff is 3:30 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
