GREENSBORO, N.C. – Bryce Holmgren and Alexa Romero, 2018 All-ACC selections, have picked up right where they left off last season garnering preseason All-ACC honors, as selected by the league's head coaches. The preseason team is made up of five infielders, four outfielders, four pitchers, one catcher and one designated player/utility and includes players from eight different schools. Syracuse is one of four schools to have two or more selections.
Holmgren led the Orange in 2018 in batting average (.413), hits (57), RBI (33), walks (25), hit by pitches (19) and tied for first with 12 doubles. Her .413 batting average is second all-time at Syracuse while her career mark of .382 is a program best. Holmgren recorded 15 multi-hit games in 2018 and has started in all 100 games during her time at Syracuse.
Romero led the nation last season with 10.9 strikeouts per seven innings, a school single-season record. Entering her junior season, Romero is fourth at Syracuse with 419 career strikeouts and seventh with 29 wins. Last season, she totaled 264 strikeouts and held opponents to a .141 batting average. A three-time ACC Pitcher of the Week, Romero garnered first team National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region and second team All-ACC honors in 2018.
As a team, the Orange was selected to finish eighth in the conference with 51 points. Reigning ACC and National Champions, Florida State was unanimously selected to repeat their conference title with 121 points and 11 first-place votes. As coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team, Virginia Tech picked up the other lone first-place vote.
The Syracuse softball team opens its 2019 campaign Feb. 8-10 in Phoenix, Ariz. at the Grand Canyon Kickoff Tournament. The Orange will be tested immediately against San Diego State, Grand Canyon and No. 4 Oklahoma.
