GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three Syracuse starting offensive linemen – Cody Conway, Koda Martin, and Airon Servais – along with senior linebackers Ryan Guthrie, Kielan Whitner and Lou Groza Award winner Andre Szmyt were named to the 2018 All-ACC Academic Football Team, announced Wednesday, Jan. 30 by the league office.
Syracuse's six selections tied Pittsburgh and Virginia for the fourth-most of any school. Only Duke (12), Georgia Tech (8), Clemson (7) had more representatives on the 70-man team, which was selected from a pool of nominees submitted by their schools.
Conway, a sport management major, received the honor for the third straight season. He is the second three-time, All-ACC Academic Team selection in program history, joining former offensive lineman Rob Trudo (2013-15). Servais and Whitner were recognized for the second time in their careers. Martin, Guthrie and Szmyt are first-time honorees.
Conway, Martin and Servais blocked for a Syracuse offense that was second in the ACC in scoring (40.2 ppg) and set the program season records for points (523) and rushing touchdowns (38). An All-ACC Honorable Mention choice, Conway started all 13 games at left tackle. He played 1,109 snaps and tallied 30.5 knockdown blocks.
Martin, a graduate student in Syracuse's instructional design, development and evaluation program and an All-ACC Third Team selection, started opposite Conway at right tackle. The Manvel, Texas native saw the field for a team-high 1,111 snaps in 2018. He ranked second on the Orange with 31.5 knockdowns, including a career-best 7.5 in 90 snaps versus Louisville.
A two-year starter at center, Servais is a health and exercise major. He garnered All-ECAC First Team honors after carding a team-best 36.5 knockdowns this past fall.
Guthrie and Whitner each posted 100-tackle seasons to lead a Syracuse defense that ranked in the top 10 nationally in five categories and set the school single-season record with 43 sacks. An All-ACC Second Team performer majoring in communication and rhetorical studies, Guthrie led the ACC with 107 tackles and ranked fifth in the league in tackles for loss (16.5). Whitner, who is an accounting major, garnered All-ECAC Honorable Mention recognition after recording 100 tackles and finishing eighth in the ACC in tackles per game (7.7).
The ninth unanimous All-American in team history and Syracuse's first Lou Groza Award winner as the nation's top kicker, Szmyt led the country in field goals made (30), field goals attempted (34), field goals per game (2.31), and points per game (11.6). His 151 points were a Syracuse record and the third-most ever by a kicker in FBS history. Szmyt is enrolled in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics.
The conference has selected an All-ACC Academic Football Team every year since 1954. To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade-point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during his undergraduate and/or graduate academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered.
