TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – In the second contest of its Florida swing, Syracuse volleyball (5-10, 2-6 ACC) lost in straight sets to Florida State (12-5, 6-2 ACC) on Sunday afternoon in Tallahassee. The Orange were defeated by scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-21 en route to their third consecutive loss. Syracuse continues Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play next weekend with a road trip to North Carolina to take on the Tar Heels and the NC State Wolfpack.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening set was tight throughout, as neither team was able to mount a lead larger than three points. Polina Shemanova paced the Orange with seven kills and a service ace in the frame, finishing with 17 kills and three aces on the day. Freshman Berkley Hayes came up with a service ace late in the set to tie the score at 22, but a Seminole kill and an Orange service error helped clinch the set for Florida State, 25-23.
Syracuse came out on fire in the middle stanza, jumping out to an early 8-2 lead thanks to kills from Shemanova and freshman Izzy Plummer. The Seminoles responded with a 9-3 scoring run fueled by kills from reigning ACC Player of the Year Payton Caffrey to even the score at 11. The set was tight until Florida State opened up a 20-15 lead, eventually taking the frame, 25-18, and a 2-0 lead in the match. Kendra Lukacs, Ella Saada and Abby Casiano also provided kills for the Orange in the set.
'Cuse led 7-4 to begin the third set, and then again 14-11, but the Seminoles were able to come back and tie the score each time. With the score knotted at 15, Florida State put together a 3-0 run to take an 18-15 lead. Kills from Saada and Elena Karakasi brought 'Cuse back and evened the score at 19, but the Seminoles would close the set and the match on a 6-2 run to secure the 3-0 sweep.
