Long-Distance Attack Leads Orange

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse unleashed a long-distance attack and took advantage of 15 3-pointers to defeat Division II Daemen, 90-71, in an exhibition game at the Dome. Redshirt junior Elijah Hughes topped the Orange with 24 points.
EARLY WILDCAT ATTACK
The visitors jumped out to an early, 7-5 advantage against the Orange. A 3-pointer from Jeff Redband put the Wildcats up two. The Orange responded with a 27-5 run and never trailed again.
During the dominant Syracuse stretch, Carey had five points, and the Orange received 3-pointers from freshmen Joseph Girard III and Brycen Goodine, and sophomore Robert Braswell.
ORANGE DISPLAY DEPTH EARLY
With 9:06 left in the first half, each of Syracuse's 12 scholarship players had made an appearance in the contest. When Bourama Sidibe scored with 1:32 prior to intermission, 10 of the 12 had scored in the game
The long-distance scoring produced by the Orange had also been spread through the roster. Syracuse had eight 3-pointers from five different shooters at the break.
ELI'S COMING
Hughes displayed his shooting range against Daemen. He was 8-of-11 from the field, 5-of-7 on 3-pointers and 3-of-4 on free-throw attempts for his 24 points. All of that was accomplished in 18 minutes of work.
He had a chance for a rare four-point play in the second half but after swishing the 3-ball, he missed his free-throw try. Hughes also led the Orange with five assists.
WILDCAT RALLY
Daemen fought back in the second half, thanks to some strong shooting. Syracuse led by 25 before the Wildcats cut it to 14, 85-71. The Orange fought off Daemen to emerge with the 19-point triumph.
The Wildcats played Syracuse even after the intermission with each club tallying 43 points over the final 20 minutes. Daemen hit 13-of-28 (.424.) from the field, including 8-of-16 (.500) 3-pointers, in the second half.
Guard Breon Harris led Daemen with 23 points while center Andrew Sischo contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Braswell had 17 points on the evening after hitting 6-of-7 from the field, including 3-of-4 3-point attempts. He made both of his free throws.
- Sidibe topped the Orange with 10 rebounds.
- The Syracuse attack was slowed by turnovers -- the Orange committed 20 miscues in the contest.
- Six different Syracuse shooters made 3-pointers – Boeheim, Braswell, Carey, Girard, Goodine, and Hughes (alphabetical order).
- Daemen's roster included redshirt senior guard Joey Wallace, a transfer from Southern Connecticut State, and the son of former Syracuse All-American John Wallace.
- Syracuse announced this week that John Wallace's jersey will be retired during a ceremony at the Feb. 29 game with North Carolina.
THE FIRST FIVE
Coach Jim Boeheim opened the contest with the same first five that he employed during the four-game exhibition slate in Italy. Sophomores Buddy Boeheim and Jalen Carey manned the backcourt spots, junior Bourama Sidibe jumped center and the forward spots were handled by redshirt junior Elijah Hughes and freshman Quincy Guerrier.
