Balanced Offense Leads Orange's First Look of Fall

There may still be months to wait until the 2020 lacrosse season officially begins, but on Saturday night in Cortland, two lacrosse powers went head-to-head in a fall scrimmage that felt like a late-spring matchup.

A large crowd was on hand to see the battle, which saw Denver and Syracuse play to a 15-15 tie. The Orange held a 15-11 lead late into the fourth quarter when the teams began subbing more freely.

"It was good to get out here against a different opponent, the guys were certainly ready for that," said head coach John Desko. "There are some things I think we did really well, we also had a lot of turnovers and didn't clear the ball well, so we'll get to film and use this to continue to get better."

Griffin Cook led the way with a hat trick, but a balanced offensive attack was the theme for the Orange, which saw 11 players register a point and no player record more than three.

Cook (3-0), Tucker Dordevic (2-1), Brendan Curry (2-1), Chase Scanlan (2-0), Jamie Trimboli (2-0), Owen Seebold (1-1), Lucas Quinn (0-2), David Lipka (1-0), Matt Magnan (1-0), Stephen Rehfuss (0-1) and Troy Lauder (1-0) were responsible for the Orange scoring.

In addition to the balanced attack, 'Cuse performed well at the faceoff X. Jake Phaup, Danny Varello and Nate Garlow split the reps nearly evenly and combined to win 61-percent of their restarts on the day.

Drake Porter also made 10 saves in three quarters of action, while Luke Strang made four stops in cage when coming on in relief for the fourth quarter.

Fans can get their next glimpse of the team at the Orange Alumni Classic on Oct. 19 in the Dome.
