SYRACUSE, N.Y – Three players in double figures carried Syracuse (1-1, 0-1 ACC) to its first victory of the season, a 70-54 triumph against in-state foe Colgate (1-2) in the Dome. Buddy Boeheim led the way with 17 points, Bourama Sidibe posted a double-double (12 points, 14 rebounds) and Elijah Hughes added 14 points for the Orange.
Wednesday's victory marked the 54th consecutive triumph for Syracuse over the Raiders, the longest winning streak for any team against a single opponent in NCAA Division I hoop history. The pairing represented the 172nd meeting between the teams and the decision gave Syracuse a 127-45 lead in the all-time series.
BATTLING BACK EARLY
Three early 3-pointers from the visitors helped Colgate to an early 9-1 advantage. Syracuse was unable to secure its first field goal until 6:07 into the contest on a layup from Sidibe.
Sidibe's basket triggered a 10-2 Syracuse run to knot the score at 11. Boeheim capped off the streak with two consecutive 3-pointers. Out of the second media timeout, a Sidibe put-back gave 'Cuse its first lead of the contest, 13-11. Through the first 12 minutes, Sidibe and Boeheim each had eight points.
Five straight points from Hughes, including a 3-ball, and a jumper from the top of the key from Joseph Girard III opened a 24-18 lead for the Orange. Colgate quickly answered, as Nelly Cummings and Jordan Burns each converted from behind the arc to tie the score.
Three made free throws from Marek Dolezaj and jumpers from Hughes and Boeheim propelled 'Cuse to a 31-25 lead at the break. Boeheim paced the Orange with 10 points.
CONTAINING THE RAIDERS
The infamous 2-3 zone defense for 'Cuse gave Colgate trouble to open the second half. The Orange held their opponents to six points after eight minutes played and stole the ball five times in that span.
The Raiders struggled to score after the intermission, falling into nearly a six-minute scoring drought in the first 10 minutes. Syracuse went on an 11-0 run during that time.
ORANGE OUTBURST
Syracuse, and the Dome crowd, came to life early in the second half, after Dolezaj threw down a two-handed slam to give the home team a 10-point advantage. Girard knocked down a shot from long range and assisted on a Sidibe alley oop to extend the Orange lead to 41-28, forcing the Raiders to call timeout.
Hughes' third 3-point make of the game pushed his team's lead to 51-31 with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Boeheim added another long-range bucket three minutes later to give 'Cuse a 58-34 lead, its largest of the night.
Howard Washington returned to action for the Orange for the first time since November 2018. The junior converted a successful 3-point play with just over five minutes to play, his first points since Jan. 27, 2018 at Pittsburgh. The Buffalo native was sidelined for the majority of the last two seasons after tearing his ACL in 2017-18 and suffering a stroke last season.
