STORRS, CONN. – The Syracuse field hockey team lost, 5-1, to No. 9 Princeton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday afternoon to end its season 12-7 overall. It was the 14th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history and 11th trip in the last 12 seasons.
"I'd like to congratulate Princeton on advancing to the next round of the NCAA Tournament," said head coach Ange Bradley. "I am incredibly proud of this group that I coached this season. I am really honored to have worked with them. And for Claire [Webb], Steph [Harris] and [Sarah] Luby, our seniors, to pull a young team so far and advance beyond what I think anyone expected other than our group."
The Tigers scored on goal in each of the first two quarters to lead 2-0 at halftime. Three Princeton goals in the third quarter extended the lead to 5-0. A tip-in goal by Claire Cooke halted the Tiger offense and put the No. 13 Orange on the board in the 42nd minute.
Syracuse had what looked like a second goal as time expired in the third quarter but a video review waved off the tally sending the Orange into the final frame trailing by four. 'Cuse applied pressure down and commanded the final quarter but was unable to connect in the circle, ultimately losing, 5-1.
Cooke scored the lone goal for the Orange, while Princeton was led by Clara Roth and Hannah Davey, each with two goals.
Sarah Sinck made five saves as Princeton outshot Syracuse 12-7. The Tigers edged the Orange 8-6 in penalty corner opportunities.
Syracuse ends its season 12-7 overall and ranked No. 13 in the nation. The Orange say farewell to seniors Stephanie Harris, Sarah Luby and Claire Webb, who played in the final game of their collegiate careers. The trio was part of three NCAA Tournament teams during their time at Syracuse.
