SYRACUSE. N.Y. – Iowa (6-2) handed Syracuse (4-4) its third straight loss, 68-54, in a Big Ten/ACC Challenge matchup Tuesday night in the Carrier Dome. The Hawkeyes have now won three of the four meetings between the teams.

Marek Dolezaj's 12 points led the Orange, followed by Elijah Hughes who scored 10. Hughes also set a new season-high in rebounds with seven.

IN THE O-ZONE
Coach Jim Boeheim's famous zone defense proved to be effective to start the contest, as the Orange forced four Hawkeye turnovers in the opening three minutes. Joseph Girard III swiped the ball twice in that span. 'Cuse cashed in on the takeaways, scoring eight fast-break points in the early going, compared to two for Iowa.

HUGHES HOPS IN
The Hawkeyes still managed to jump out to a 10-7 lead on the back of a pair of 3-pointers from sophomore guard Joe Wieskamp. Hughes' first bucket, a long 3-ball, gave Syracuse a 12-10 advantage with 13:43 to play in the first half.

Hughes buried another from beyond the arc five minutes later to give his team a 19-18 lead.

SPREADING THE BALL
In the closing moments of a back-and-forth first half, Buddy Boeheim knocked down a 3-point shot to put the Orange on top 26-25. Dolezaj added a make from the perimeter and Iowa went to the break with a 30-29 advantage. Five different Orange players scored points in the first 20 minutes, Dolezaj leading the way with 10. Bourama Sidibe grabbed five boards to top the squad.

HAWKEYES HEAT UP
Luke Garza and Jordan Bohannon each buried 3-balls to push the Hawkeye lead to six out of the gates in the second half. Bohannon would add another one from downtown to increase the cushion to nine with 13:57 remaining in regulation. Iowa hit seven of its first 10 field goals out of the intermission and outscored Syracuse 26-9 in 11 minutes of play, leading by as many as 18.

The Orange were within 14 with five minutes left after a successful 3-point play from Girard, but the Hawkeyes kept their foot on the gas as the game drew to a close.

NOTABLE NUMBERS

Sidibe led Syracuse with eight rebounds. Iowa held the edge in boards, 37-36 for the game.
Girard paced the Orange with four assists, tied for the game-high.
'Cuse finished with 26 points in the paint, compared to 24 for the Hawkeyes.
The Orange got 11 points from bench players. Iowa got eight from their reserves.
The Hawkeyes hit 11 3-point shots. Syracuse finished with six makes from the perimeter.

UP NEXT
The Orange begin their conference road slate Saturday, Dec. 7 at Georgia Tech. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ACC Network.
