GAINESVILLE, FLA. – Syracuse (4-9) scored two runs late in the game against No. 3 Florida but ultimately fell 8-2 to Florida (17-0) Sunday afternoon in the final day of the Bubly Invitational.
Alicia Hansen led the Orange at the plate with a 2-of-3 performance that included one RBI and a walk. Syracuse ended the day with six hits, the second most any teams has had off the Gators this season.
Sophie Dandola (3-3) threw her second consecutive complete game, going all six innings against the Gators. She allowed eight runs on six hits with four strikeouts and five walks.
The Gators were led in the circle by Kelly Barnhill (9-0), who remains undefeated in 2019, after throwing the first 4.2 innings of the game. She allowed three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts before being relieved by Elizabeth Hightower. Hightower gave up both runs to Syracuse on three hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Syracuse looked to threaten early with a pair of walks from Gabby Teran and Hansen to lead off the first inning. A single from Bryce Holmgren loaded the bases but a fielders' choice and back-to-back strikeouts kept the Orange from scoring a run.
Florida's Amanda Lorenz lead off the first inning with a solo homerun, for the second-straight game, giving the Gators a 1-0 lead. The Gators loaded the bases on a walk, single and hit by pitch but also left the runners stranded at the end of the frame. Florida had big second and third innings, taking a 5-0 lead on four hits that included a two-RBI single from Kendyl Lindaman.
Syracuse got on the board in the sixth inning, avoiding a second shutout against Florida. Neli Casares-Maher reached second base following an error by the Gators left fielder. One batter later, Hannah Dossett singled to score Casares-Maher, 5-1.
'Cuse was able to retire the leadoff batter in the bottom of the sixth before Florida drew a hit by pitch followed by a single up the middle. With the bases loaded, Lindaman grounded out to shortstop but still allowed the Florida baserunner to score. A double by Jordan Roberts brought in two more runs for an 8-1 lead. Despite loading the bases for the second time in the inning, Dandola got out of the jam with a strikeout to the Gators' pinch hitter, Danielle Romanello.
The Orange ended the game swinging in the top of the seventh. With one out, Toni Martin singled down the left field line and moved another 60 feet after a sac bunt from Gabby Teran. Hansen sent a hard hit ball directly to the shortstop giving Martin the play at home to score an additional run.
