Three Syracuse University student-athletes are being recognized for their academic and athletic achievements with the 2019 Atlantic Coast Conference Postgraduate Scholarship Award. Orange student-athletes Marcus Cunningham (men's lacrosse), Santita Ebangwese (volleyball) and Arianna Lee (rowing) are three of 52 Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes to earn the honor.
Â
The Weaver-James-Corrigan and Jim and Pat Thacker postgraduate scholarships are awarded to selected student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements. Each recipient will receive $6,000 towards their graduate education. Those honored have performed with distinction in both the classroom and their respective sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.
Â
A senior captain, Cunningham has started each of the last three seasons on close defense. The Glen Ridge, N.J. native had 18 ground balls and eight caused turnovers last season. He is a two-time ACC All-Academic honoree and a 2018 ACC All-Academic selection. He received a B.S. in biology from the College of Arts and Sciences in May and is currently pursuing a certificate of advanced study in global health from the David B. Falk School of Sport and Human Dynamics. Cunningham has caused four turnovers already this season, picking up where he left off.
Â
Ebangwese, who also earned a NCAA Postgraduate scholarship, is one of three AVCA All-Americans in program history after helping the Orange qualify for their first NCAA Tournament in 2018. She is the program's second Google Cloud Academic All-American as well as a 2018 Senior CLASS Award finalist. She concluded her senior season with an NCAA-best .425 hitting percentage and holds five top-10 career marks at Syracuse. The Rochester, N.Y. native is a two-time AVCA All-Region and All-ACC honoree. A bioengineering major, she was the 2018 ACC Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, a four-time All-ACC Academic team member.
Â
Lee has held a seat in a varsity boat in every regatta during her career at Syracuse. She helped her boat to a 16th place finish last spring at the NCAA Championships as well as second at the ACC Championships. In 2017, Lee was a part of the second varsity eight boat that earned 2017 ACC Crew of the Year and an 11th place showing at the NCAA Championships. A computer engineering major, Lee is also a three-time All-ACC Academic honoree. The Folsom, Calif. native has also represented the United States in the 2018 U23 World Championships and the 2015 World Rowing Junior Championships.
Â
The student-athletes will be honored at the annual Cone Health ACC Postgraduate Scholarship Luncheon presented by ESPN on April 10. The luncheon will be hosted by the Nat Greene Kiwanis Club in Greensboro, N.C.
