One of the greatest players in the sport is returning to work with his alma mater. Ryan Powell, a 2017 inductee to the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame, has joined Head Coach John Desko's staff as the Program Advisor for Camps, Clinics and Player Identification.
Powell will be responsible for overseeing Syracuse's camps and clinics and providing input on personnel and schemes to the team's coaching staff. In this role, Powell cannot recruit off campus or serve in an on-field coaching role due to NCAA regulations, but he will be instrumental working with top players at Orange clinics. He'll be assisted by Tim Desko, an All-American player in his own right and son of Coach Desko. Powell will also continue to be the analyst on Syracuse's ACC Network Extra broadcasts as well.
Powell, the 28th Syracuse alum to be inducted into the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame, is the second-leading scorer in Orange history. The second of three brothers who dominated collegiate lacrosse for a decade, led the Orange to the 2000 NCAA Championship while scoring 96 points on the year. He capped off that season with the Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award for the nation's top player. He also earned the Lt. Col. Jack Turnbull Award as the nation's top attackman. He ended his career with 287 points, tied with older brother Casey for what was the most in an Orange uniform before being surpassed by younger brother Mike (307).
"Having an opportunity to bring in someone of Ryan's caliber to our staff is an incredible opportunity for our program," Desko said. "While Ryan's role won't allow him to be an on-field coach, his ability to attract top talent to our camps and work in an advisory role with our coaching staff will be a great addition for the Orange."
After college, Powell went on to play professionally until 2010, splitting between both the NLL and MLL. A two-tome player at the FIL World Championships with the U.S. Men's National Team, Powell led the Americans to gold in 2010. During his eight year stint with the NLL, Powell racked up 140 goals and 377 points. Outdoors, he scored 190 career goals and posted 180 assists, also earning All-Star MVP honors in 2008.
Since his playing career ended, Powell has continued to work around the game. Most notably with Rhino Lacrosse, running clinics, tournaments and coaching select teams in seven states. His teams have showcased some top talent, including current sophomore midfielder Tucker Dordevic.
"Syracuse University lacrosse means the world to me and I couldn't be more proud to join the coaching staff. The 'Cuse has a rich lacrosse history, amazing facilities and a world class coaching staff," Powell said. "I look forward to learning from the coaches and helping to continue lacrosse excellence with the Orange. The program will receive my Head, Heart & Hustle as I step into this new role."
