The loss drops Syracuse's record to 4-3 overall this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Singles play began first due to impending weather, and the Orange started the match on a positive note. Syracuse picked up three wins in singles thanks to No. 48-ranked senior Gabriela Knutson, No. 67-ranked junior Miranda Ramirez and senior Libi Mesh.
Syracuse held a 3-1 lead and was only one match win away from capturing the dual victory, but Pepperdine fought back and evened the score at 3.
With new life, the Waves carried that momentum into doubles action. Knutson and Ramirez fell to Ashley Lahey and Evgeniya Levashova, the No. 1-ranked duo in the nation, 7-5, and junior Guzal Yusupova and senior Dina Hegab dropped their match, 6-4, giving Pepperdine the doubles point and a 4-3 win.
OF NOTE
The setback against Pepperdine marks the fourth straight dual in which Syracuse has dropped the doubles point. The Orange have lost three of those four duals, losing 4-3 in each of them.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
Syracuse plays No. 16 Ohio State in the second round.
After the ITA Indoor Championship is complete, the Orange are headed home for two duals at Drumlins Country Club. Syracuse plays Colorado at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15 before hosting Harvard at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 17.
