OVERLAND PARK, KAN. – Syracuse senior outfielder Bryce Holmgren is one of 30 candidates for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award. The annual award is given to senior student-athletes who have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Holmgren is one of two candidates from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the fifth Syracuse student-athlete this season to be a top-30 candidate.
A 2018 All-ACC First Team selection and Second Team NFCA Mid-Atlantic selection, Holmgren led the conference in batting average (.413) and on-base percentage (.549) last season. The senior is on pace to set new school career records in batting average (.371) and on-base percentage (.509), while already holding the 'Cuse career hit by pitch mark (35).
Holmgren's long resume of community service includes serving as a counselor at Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) camps, a volunteer at Crouse Hospital and helping lead a SAAC Sexual Assault Prevention Program. While volunteering at Crouse Hospital, Holmgren has worked in the emergency department, NICU and medical imaging unit. She served as a volunteer in the Spring of 2018 to help organize a Polar Plunge event, raising money for Special Olympics.
She is working toward a degree in biology with a minor in Spanish, and plans to apply to medical school after graduation. Holmgren was named to the 2018 All-ACC Academic Team and the ACC Honor Roll. She has also been named to the Syracuse Athletic Director's Honor Roll for the last two years, signifying at least a 3.0 GPA.
A leader on and off the field, Holmgren is currently a captain for the softball team and has served as the vice president for Syracuse's FCA since Spring 2017.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed down to 10 finalists later in the season. Those 10 student-athletes will be placed on ballots distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans who will select one candidate that best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The winner will be announced during the 2019 Women's College World Series.
CLASS is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School. The award program is designed exclusively for college seniors and focuses on the total student-athlete, encouraging students to use their platform in athletes to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Holmgren and the Syracuse softball team open ACC play this weekend with a three-game series at Louisville.
