SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men's basketball team drew the No. 8 seed in the West Region when the bracket for the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship was unveiled on Sunday night.
Â
Syracuse (20-13) received one of the 36 at-large berths into the 68-team field and will face No. 9 seed Baylor in the first round on Thursday, March 21 at the Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City. Tipoff will be at approximately 9:57 p.m. (EST).
"We figured we'd be out West and that's how it turned out," Orange head coach Jim Boeheim said. "I've seen Baylor a little bit. They're a very, very good team. That's what you're going to get in this tournament."
Â
The Orange are making their 40th NCAA Tournament appearance overall and the 34th under Boeheim. Syracuse is 64-39 (.621) in NCAA Tournament play and has advanced to six Final Fours (1975, 1987, 1996, 2003, 2013, 2016). The Orange have reached three national championship games (1987, 1996, 2003), winning the title in 2003.
Â
This season marks the second time Syracuse has been seeded eighth. The first time was in 1999 when the Orange were the No. 8 seed in the South Region. Syracuse is 0-1 all-time as a No. 8 seed and owns an 0-1 record in NCAA Tournament games played in Salt Lake City.
The last time the Orange was placed in the West Region was in 2010. That year Syracuse was the region's top seed and won two games in Buffalo before losing in Salt Lake City to Butler in the Sweet 16.
Like Syracuse, Baylor earned an at-large berth into the tournament. The Bears, coached by Scott Drew, are 19-13 overall, including a 10-8 Big 12 record.
The Bears are led by All-Big 12 Second Team performer Makai Mason and sophomore forward Tristan Clark. Both players are averaging a team-best 14.6 points per outing, though Clark has played just 14 games this season. Mario Kegler (10.7 ppg) and Jared Butler (10.1 ppg) round out Baylor's four double-figure scorers.
Â
All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection Mark Vital leads the Bears in rebounding at 7.2 boards per contest.
Â
Syracuse is 2-0 all-time against the Bears, including a 74-67 triumph in the championship game of the 2013 Maui Invitational. The first meeting between Syracuse and Baylor came during the 2006-07 season and was won by the Orange, 94-71.
