Two Syracuse University student-athletes are among the 12 seniors named as the 2019 Syracuse University Scholars, the highest undergraduate honor that the University bestows. Hendrik Hilpert, a four-year soccer letter winner, and Santita Ebangwese, a volleyball All-American, are the most recent Orange student-athletes to earn this honor. Since 1983, seventeen Syracuse student-athletes have been selected as University Scholars.
The 2019 University Scholars will represent the entire graduating class at the May 12 Commencement ceremony. On Wednesday, May 8th, the scholars will be honored at a reception at the Chancellor's House hosted by Chancellor Kent Syverud and Dr. Ruth Chen, at which they will receive special medallions to be worn at Commencement. The scholars were honored at the One University awards ceremony on April 12, in Hendricks Chapel.
Ebangwese, a bioengineering major College of Engineering and Computer Science and a member of the Renée Crown University Honors Program, earned an NCAA Postgraduate scholarship and an ACC Postgraduate scholarship. She was the 2018 ACC Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a four-time All-ACC Academic team member. She is the program's second Google Cloud Academic All-American, and a 2018 Senior CLASS Award finalist. On the court, Ebangwese became one of three AVCA All-Americans in program history after helping to lead the Orange to the program's first NCAA Tournament in 2018. She concluded her senior season with an NCAA-best .425 hitting percentage and holds five top-10 career marks at Syracuse. The Rochester, N.Y., native is a two-time AVCA All-Region and All-ACC honoree.
Hilpert, a senior finance major in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, is a three-time Academic All-American. The three-time All-ACC Academic Team selection is one of the most successful goalkeepers in program history. He closed his career ranked fourth in career wins (35) and fourth in career shutouts (23). Hilpert was named the United Soccer Coaches Player of the Week and ACC Defensive Player of the Week after he made five saves in a 2-0 win against No. 1 Wake Forest.
The Syracuse University Scholars Selection Committee, a University-wide faculty committee, selected the 2019 scholars using criteria that included coursework and academic achievement, independent research and creative work, evidence of intellectual growth and/or innovation in their disciplinary field, a personal statement and faculty letters of recommendation.
