ATLANTA – The Syracuse softball team was unable to halt Georgia Tech's offense as the Yellow Jackets came away with a 9-1, five-inning, victory Sunday afternoon. Syracuse's (20-28, 8-13 ACC) lone run came on a solo home run by Neli Casares-Maher in the fifth inning.
Bryce Holmgren and Alicia Hansen also recorded hits for the Orange, including Hansen's double in the first inning.
Alexa Romero started in the circle for 'Cuse allowing six runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Miranda Hearn entered with two outs in the second inning and went the distance for the Orange. Hearn allowed three runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
Georgia Tech (30-23, 11-10 ACC) loaded the bases to open the first inning with a pair of walks and a hit by pitch before scoring two runs on a double to center field. A wild pitch would plate the third run for a 3-0 Yellow Jacket lead. The lead expanded 6-0 in the bottom of the second following a three-run home run by Tricia Awald.
Tech continued their scoring efforts thanks to an RBI-double in the third and two singles in the fourth with base runners. Facing a 9-0 deficit, Casares-Maher broke through the potential shutout, leading off the fifth inning with her fifth home run of the season. Hannah Dossett reached base on a hit by pitch before back-to-back fly outs took Syracuse to their last out of the game. A Tech fielding error and walk to Alicia Hansen loaded the bases for the Orange but they were unable to bring a run across to extend the game.
