
Orange Lead the Way with 9 All-Academic Selections

Nine Syracuse student-athletes were selected to the ACC All-Academic team, the most of any school in the league.
Tyson Bomberry (communication and rhetorical studies), Marcus Cunningham (global health), Brendan Curry (marketing), Jared Fernandez (communication and rhetorical studies), Brett Kennedy (information management and technology), David Lipka (entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises), Drake Porter (advertising), Stephen Rehfuss (communication and rhetorical studies) and Jamie Trimboli (biology) were honored for their academic and athletic success.
The Orange tied Virginia for the most selections in the league, followed by Notre Dame (8), North Carolina (7) and Duke (6). To make the team, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average and also have above a 3.0 for the prior semester. Athletic achievements from the prior season are also used in selecting the All-ACC Academic team. Seven of the Orange's nine selections return next season.
Bomberry, a team captain, led all field players with 61 ground balls and tied for the team lead with 19 caused turnovers during his senior season. He concludes his career tied for sixth in program history with 48 career caused turnovers. He was tabbed as a USILA Honorable Mention All-American this season.
Cunningham, a three-year starter and team captain, caused nine turnovers and collected 13 ground balls. A Senior CLASS Award nominee, Cunningham earned his B.S. last May in biology, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He earned a certificate of advanced study in global health through the David B. Falk School of Sport and Human Dynamics this spring.
A Baltimore native, Curry wrapped up his breakout sophomore campaign as a Third Team All-America selection. Tied with Trimboli as the leading scorer from the 'Cuse midfield, he registered 33 points on 19 goals and 14 assists. He's enrolled in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management.
Fernandez was a top-LSM option and star on faceoff wings for the Orange this season. Enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences, he finished fourth on the team with 36 ground balls and caused 10 turnovers during his sophomore campaign.
Kennedy emerged as one of the nation's top LSMs this season, earning USILA Third Team All-America honors. The redshirt-sophomore caused 13 turnovers and finished third on the team with 44 ground balls. He's also enrolled in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management.
Following his redshirt-sophomore campaign, Lipka earned a coveted internship with Nike, where he's spending this summer. Enrolled in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, Lipka tallied 14 goals and 10 assists on the Orange's first midfield unit this season.
Porter is enrolled in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communcations and was selected to the All-ACC Team as the league's top goalie this season. Finishing in the top-10 nationally in save percentage (.562) and goals allowed (10.35), Porter's first season as a starter with solid numbers.
The lone player set to return from the Orange's starting attack this season, Rehfuss finished the year with 39 points – good for third on the team – including a team-high 21 assists. He's enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
An Honorable Mention All-American for the second-straight season, Trimboli is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences. He tied for the scoring lead among midfielders with 33 points (19-14). He heads into his senior season with 79 career points.
