SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Polina Shemanova, a rising sophomore on the Syracuse volleyball team, helped Russia claim the bronze medal at the FIVB U20 Women's World Championship in León, Mexico.
Russia posted a 6-2 tournament record, shutting out two opponents along the way. The squad beat Turkey, 3-1, in the bronze medal match. Shemanova recorded 10 kills against Turkey, which was her best performance of the tournament.
Shemanova had another great showing in a pool play match against Argentina on July 14 when she started all three sets and posted seven kills.
The 2018 AVCA All- America Honorable Mention selection came into the tournament with plenty of international experience. Shemanova was on the Russian team that took third place at the U18 World Championships. She was also named the MVP of the Russian Volleyball Championships.
The St. Petersburg native had a standout freshman season for the Orange. She earned All-America honors and was named the AVCA East Region Freshman of the Year. Shemanova was also the ACC Freshman of the Year and was on the All-ACC First team as well as the All-ACC Academic team. She posted double-digit kills in 26 out of 28 matches and had at least 20 kills in nine matches. Shemanova set a record for the most kills by a freshman in Syracuse history with 477. That number was also good for ninth in program history for kills in a season.
Shemanova and the rest of the Orange will start the 2019 season on September 15 against Baylor in Madison, Wisc.
