Long-Distance Attack Helps Orange Win, 103-54

VICENZA, ITALY – Syracuse used a second-half, 3-point barrage, and a strong defensive effort to defeat Oxygen Bassano, 103-54. The Orange improved to 2-0 on its current exhibition tour of Italy.
Sophomore Buddy Boeheim hit five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 22 points. He was named game MVP for his effort. Sophomore Jalen Carey added 11 points and junior Bourama Sidibe finished with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Syracuse ended the game with 16 3-point baskets.
A Batty Beginning
The Orange were greeted by a few local bats during the early warmup period. Fortunately, the bats were talked into departing the court area and pre-game shots continued.
Trailing 5-4 in the early going, Syracuse scored 14 unanswered points to move ahead, 18-5. Freshman forward Quincy Guerrier had a dunk, drive and two free throws in the stretch. The Orange had a 21-9 edge after the first period.
Running To The Half
Syracuse closed out the second quarter with an 18-0 run. Joseph Girard III had seven points and Buddy Boeheim five during the hot streak. The Orange entered the intermission with a 48-18 advantage.
Despite the advantage, Syracuse shooters were off the mark, missing its first 10 3-point attempts in the opening half before entering the intermission 5-of-20 (.250) from the arc.
Threes In The Third
Syracuse found its bearings from the 3-point line in the third quarter. A 23-0 Orange stretch included four straight 3-pointers from Boeheim. Jalen Carey, Girard III, Brycen Goodine and Howard Washington jumped on the 3-ball parade and Syracuse had eight in the period.
Oxygen scored the last five points of the third quarter but Syracuse led, 82-33.
Finishing Out The Fourth
Coach Jim Boeheim cleared his bench in the final period. Walk-ons Brendan Paul, a sophomore, and graduate student Shawn Belbey contributed a 3-pointer and a lay-in, respectively.
Double Digits
The Orange finished with five players with double-digit points. In addition to Boeheim, Carey and Sidibe, Guerrier (10 points) and Girard III (10 points) joined in.
Dominant Defense
Syracuse played its 2-3 zone configuration for the first three quarters. After a stint of man-to-man to start the fourth period, the Orange returned to the zone.
Syracuse limited Oxygen Bassano to 18-of-63 (.286) from the field, including a 6-of-30 (.250) effort on 3-point attempts.
Sharpshooters
The Orange converted 38-of-82 (.463) from the field, including 16-of-43 (.372) on 3-point attempts.
Boardwork
In addition to Sidibe's double-digit rebound effort, Syracuse received solid board showings from Guerrier and sophomore forward Robert Braswell, who each contributed eight. Braswell grabbed six of his boards at the offense end. Boeheim, Carey and Goodine have five rebounds apiece.
For Starters
The Orange utilized the same first five as the first exhibition game – Carey and Boeheim as guards, redshirt junior Elijah Hughes and Guerrier at forward and Sidibe at center.
In The Giving Spirit
The two teams exchanged gifts following the national anthem. The Orange presented the Oxygen Bassano with Syracuse hats. The hosts responded with a bright Orange shirt that read College Basketball Tour.
What's Next
On Thursday, the Orange move on from Venice and travel to Florence. Syracuse's next game is on Saturday.
