Six Score In Double Digits, Orange Win 115-56

SIENA, ITALY – Six players scored in double digits and Syracuse's defense stymied Siena Select in a 115-56 triumph for the Orange. The win improved the team's exhibition-game record to 3-0 in Italy.
Everyone's Involved
Double-digit point totals came from freshman Joseph Girard III (16), sophomore guard Jalen Carey (15), freshman forward Quincy Guerrier (14), redshirt junior Elijah Hughes (13), junior center Bourama Sidibe (10) and freshman guard Brycen Goodine. Sophomore forward Robert Braswell (nine) was right behind.
In another sign of balance -- when junior guard Howard Washington splashed a 3-pointer in the third quarter, all 11 Syracuse scholarship players had scored.
For The Defense
Syracuse employed both man-to-man and zone defense in the victory, and had success in each. The Orange were especially stingy in the second and third quarters, holding Siena Select to nine and 10 points, respectively.
Siena Select managed just 20-of-65 (.308) from the field, including a 7-of-29 (.241) showing from 3-point distance.Syracuse forced the opposition into 21 turnovers.
Hughes Ignites Orange Early
Redshirt junior Elijah Hughes helped the Orange get off to a fast start with three early 3-pointers, the last of which put Syracuse ahead, 17-11. Sophomore guard Jalen Carey took it from there with seven straight Syracuse points, including a dunk and three-point play. When freshman Joe Girard hit his second 3-pointer of the first period, it gave his club a 32-17 margin at the break.
Braswell Breaks Out
Sophomore forward Robert Braswell played a part in Syracuse extending its advantage in the second quarter. He tallied nine points in the period, and the Orange closed out the quarter with a 15-4 run which featured 3-pointers from sophomore guard Buddy Boeheim and freshman guard Brycen Goodine.
Syracuse entered the halftime intermission with a 54-26 lead.
Guerrier's Double-Double
Guerrier finished with a squad-leading 10 rebounds to go with his 14 points. He was a key cog in the Orange machine in the third quarter, posting a 3-pointer followed by a dunk in back-to-back plays. He added a rebound basket in the period and Syracuse outscored Siena Select in the quarter, 38-10. The Orange were up 92-36 heading into the fourth.
Syracuse put together a 22-0 stretch during the period. Boeheim had two 3-pointers early in the hot streak.
Everybody Plays
With the benefit of comfortable lead in the final period, Coach Jim Boeheim wa able to offer court time to everyone who dressed for the game. Freshman walk-on Brandan Paul took advantage of his opportunity and connected on a 3-pointer late in the contest.
Raining Threes
Syracuse connected on 17 3-pointers in the contest. Girard III led the way with four, follwed by Hughes and Boeheim who each added three. Goodine and Washington contributed two apiece, and Braswell, Guerrier and Paul converted one.
The Orange ended the game having made 17-of-40 (.425).
Notable Numbers
- Sidibe had a game-high five blocked shots and contributed six rebounds.
- Overall, the Orange were 38-of-71 (.535) from the field. It was the team's top shooting effort of the trip, so far.
- Syracuse outrebounded Siena Select, 43-31.
- Carey finished with four assists and five steals.
- Guerrier had five assists and logged a squad-high 25 minutes of action.
Starting Again
Coach Boeheim stayed with the first five he put on the court in the first two exhibition games: Carey and Boeheim as guards, Hughes and Guerrier at forward and Sidibe at center.
In The Giving Spirit
The two teams exchanged gifts following the national anthem. The Orange presented Siena Select with Syracuse hats. The hosts responded with gift sets of local foods for the coaching staff and director of athletics John Wildhack.
What's Next
On Sunday, the Orange close out their four-game exhibition schedule against Virtus Roma in Rome. The game has a 7:00 p.m. tipoff in Italy, 1:00 p.m. EST.
