Recap: DeVito Accounts for Four Touchdowns in Second Camp Scrimmage

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Redshirt sophomore Tommy DeVito was responsible for four touchdowns in Syracuse's second training camp scrimmage at Schwartzwalder Field on Saturday, Aug. 17. The third-year signal-caller threw three TD passes and scored once himself in the team's last preseason tuneup before the Orange open the 2019 campaign in two weeks at Liberty.
Two of DeVito's touchdown passes were to tight ends, as he connected with both junior Aaron Hackett and freshman Luke Benson for scores. DeVito also threw a 15-yard TD strike to receiver Taj Harris and added a 28-yard touchdown of his own.
Unlike last week's scrimmage, which was heavily dominated by the defense, DeVito's production was indicative of a more balanced competition between the two sides.
"I'm really pleased with the way they [the players] competed and I think we're getting ready," head coach Dino Babers said. "There's no doubt the defense is going to be really, really good. Those guys are still creating turnovers and making plays. It was good to see the offense bounce back a little bit and make some plays."
In total, Syracuse executed 125 plays in just under 90 minutes this morning. The format was offense versus defense with drives starting at various points on the field. No extra points were kicked after touchdowns. The offense notched eight touchdowns, while the defense recorded six sacks, one safety and three takeaways, including a pair of interceptions.
Like the first scrimmage, DeVito quarterbacked the first team, while Clayton Welch and Rex Culpepper worked with the second unit. Also like the first scrimmage, this morning's outing started with a safety. Freshman Steve Linton sacked Welch in the end zone on the first play. Senior defensive end and Bednarik Award candidate Alton Robinson also had a sack in the early going.
The Syracuse offense righted the ship on the fifth series, using a big run by sophomore Jarveon Howard to set up its first points. Howard took a handoff and went 65 yards to put the offense in scoring position. A few plays later, 2018 Lou Groza Award winner Andre Szmyt capped the drive with a 36-yard field goal.
Later in the scrimmage, DeVito dashed into the end zone from 28 yards out for the offense's first touchdown.
Other standout performers for the offense included Benson and freshman running back Jawhar Jordan. Both players finished with two touchdowns. Jordan scored twice on the ground, including a 16-yard run in which he bowled over an Orange defender. Benson caught two 35-yard touchdowns on balls thrown by DeVito and Welch on consecutive plays.
Freshman quarterback Drew Gunther also had a touchdown pass. He launched a Hail Mary that redshirt junior Zack Lesko came down with in the end zone between two defenders.
Defensively, All-America safety Andre Cisco and and his position-mate Devon Clarke recorded interceptions. The two picks came in the span of three plays. Redshirt junior Tyrell Richards accounted for the defense's third takeaway. Richards stripped quarterback David Summers and recovered the ball himself. Richards likely would have returned the fumble for a touchdown had the play not been whistled dead.
Linton, Robinson, Lakiem Williams, Kenneth Ruff and Kingsley Jonathan each had a sack for the defense. Rookies Jason Muñoz and Ishmael Goulbourne shared the unit's other sack.
With their two camp scrimmages now behind them, the Orange have four more practices before breaking camp and officially turning their attention to Liberty.
This year's Orange squad returns 17 starters from last year's team that went 10-3 and defeated West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl. Syracuse is ranked No. 22 in this year's preseason Amway Coaches Poll.
Season and single-game tickets for Syracuse football are on sale now online (Cuse.com/tickets), by phone (888-DOME-TIX) and in person at the Dome Box Office located in the Ensley Athletic Center. Season tickets start at $125.
