Volleyball Wins Second Match In A Row, Sweeps Northeastern

BOSTON, MASS. - The Syracuse volleyball team (2-4) started its Boston road trip on the right foot, sweeping the Northeastern Huskies in their building Friday night. This is the second victory in a row for the Orange, winning by scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-15. The team crosses the Charles River to take on Harvard in Cambridge tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse grabbed the opening set, 25-19, on the back of five kills from freshman Marina Markova and six digs from junior Yuliia Yastrub. The Orange posted a combined hitting percentage of .370 in set one. 'Cuse never trailed in the opening set, but the Huskies remained within striking distance, only trailing 18-17. A pair of kills from Ella Saada and errors from Northeastern led to a 7-2 run from the Orange to end the frame. Syracuse won the battle at the net, out-blocking the Huskies, 3-0.

The teams were knotted at 10 midway through the second set. Saada, Markova, Polina Shemanova and Elena Karakasi all contributed kills for the Orange. Syracuse seemed to hit their stride at this point, going on a 15-7 run to take the set, 25-17, and a 2-0 lead in the match. Saada contributed eight kills on 10 total attempts in the middle stanza and a season-high 17 for the match with a .560 hitting percentage. Karakasi recorded 10 assists in each of the first two sets for the Orange, 27 for the match.

Once again the teams were tied in the middle of the third set, 12-12. The Orange would go on a 13-3 run to take the set, 25-15, and sweep the match. Markova had a pair of service aces in the final frame and four in the match. Coming into Friday's action, the freshman was third in the nation in aces per set with 0.88. She has aced 19 times this season.

NOTEWORTHY
Syracuse's .407 hitting percentage against the Huskies was its highest of the 2019 season so far. The Orange also only made 11 errors, a season-low.Â
Freshman Berkley Hayes made her first collegiate start at libero for 'Cuse.Â
