Recap: Maryland Defeats Syracuse, 63-20
9/7/2019 4:25:00 PM | Football
Syracuse redshirt sophomore quarterback Tommy DeVito passed for a career-high 330 yards and tied his personal best with three touchdown passes in the defeat.
The Terrapins, who scored 79 points in their opener last week against Howard, continued to produce offensive pyrotechnics. Maryland tallied nine touchdowns against Orange and Saturday's outing represented the first time in program history the Terps scored at least 63 points in consecutive games.
QUOTABLE
"Well, this is definitely humble pie. I don't know what it tastes like, but it probably tastes like exactly the way I feel right now," said Orange head coach Dino Babers. "So, we'll go home. We are still family and we will work on us and hopefully this season we'll recover and we will be happy with what happens at the end of this, when this is all done, with the results."
MARYLAND TAKES A PAGE OUT OF SYRACUSE'S BOOK
The Terps' offense operated in a high-speed mode similar to what Syracuse has employed in recent years. The hosts produced 50 offensive plays and 397 yards in the first half alone. Maryland converted 8-of-9 third-down conversion attempts and scored on all six of its red-zone opportunities in the first two quarters.
The Terps finished with 650 total yards, the seventh-highest total yielded by Syracuse in program history. The Orange amassed 400 yards of offense on 70 plays.
ACTION JACKSONS
Two players with the surname Jackson turned in standout performances Saturday. Orange receiver Trishton Jackson caught seven passes for a career-high 157 yards and two touchdowns. His 52-yard touchdown in the third quarter represented Syracuse's longest play from scrimmage.
Terrapin quarterback Josh Jackson completed 21-of-38 passes for 296 yards and three touchdowns. He took advantage of the many weapons at his disposal with eight Maryland players catching at least two passes.
A RARE SZMYT MISCUE
Reshirt sophomore kicker Andre Szmyt converted his first PAT, but misfired on his second attempt. It was the first miss of his career and ended his streak of 65 consecutive extra points made.
Szmyt embarked on a new streak when he made his only attempt of the second half.
DeVITO THROWS A RALLY AT MARYLAND
Tommy DeVito tried to keep the Orange in the game through the air. He tossed touchdown passes of nine and 15 yards to Trishton Jackson and senior Sean Riley, respectively, in the first half. He teamed with Jackson again in the third quarter on a 52-yard scoring toss. After DeVito threw a strike, the wideout spun away from a would-be tackler and sprinted to paydirt. The touchdown closed the gap to 49-20, but marked the last time Syracuse would score in the game.
A week after connecting on less than 50 percent of his passes, DeVito completed 71.8 percent of his attempts, going 28-of-39 against the Terps.
