
Volleyball Suffers Second Consecutive Loss at #11 Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Syracuse volleyball team (0-2) lost the second leg of their Wisconsin trip against No. 11 Marquette Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee. The Orange were swept, losing the sets 25-12, 25-23 and 25-18. The team will have to regroup with a tough weekend ahead at the Kansas Invitational, facing Morehead State, Arizona and the host Jayhawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange got off to another slow start, finding themselves in a 3-9 hole in the first set. Polina Shemanova registered five kills in the set, but it was all Golden Eagles, who would go on to win, 25-12. Â
Syracuse upped the energy to begin the second frame. Two consecutive service aces from Yuliia Yastrub propelled the Orange to an early 3-1 lead, and the teams were even at five points apiece. With a 9-7 lead, Marquette went on a 7-0 run, but Syracuse would come roaring back to make the score 23-22. The Golden Eagles would hang on to win the second set, 25-23, and take a 2-0 set lead. Freshman setter Lauren Woodford added two service aces of her own. Â
The third set was constant back and forth volleyball. The teams were tied at six and exchanged points until things were even at 16. The Golden Eagles would take control, ending the match on a 9-2 run and winning the final five points. Â
NOTEWORTHY
Shemanova led the Orange in kills (11) and senior libero Aliah Bowllan set the pace in digs (11). Woodford contributed 16 assists. Freshman defensive specialist Berkley Hayes made her intercollegiate debut for the Orange. Ella Saada and Marina Markova each notched six kills.
