SYRACUSE – The 'Hoops for the Stars' program will be highlighted on Jan. 15 with an on-court presentation at the Carrier Dome to honor more than 150 area youth at the Syracuse University men's basketball game against Boston College. A similar event is scheduled for Feb. 29, when North Carolina comes to the Dome.
For the 12th year in a row, Syracuse University and National Grid Foundation continue to partner to provide positive reinforcement, recognition of improved academic performance and attendance in school, a decrease in negative behavior, and positive contributions to the community. The program underscores a shared commitment by Syracuse University Athletics, National Grid Foundation and the Syracuse City School District to work together in enriching the educational and life experience of area youth.
"We are again thrilled to partner with the National Grid Foundation, for the 12thyear in a row, to support the Syracuse City School District," said John Wildhack, Syracuse University Director of Athletics. "The opportunity to reward students from our community with a Syracuse Basketball experience and encourage exceptional behavior, in and out of the classroom, is what makes this program so special."
Through a National Grid Foundation commitment of $35,000 this year, Syracuse University Athletics is providing tickets to 12 men's basketball home games. Ticket recipients include more than 2,300 student achievers from eight middle schools in the Syracuse City School District and a parent or guardian to select Orange Men Basketball games.
"The National Grid Foundation is pleased to again team up with Syracuse University for the 13th year of Hoops for the Stars," said Melanie Littlejohn, Board Member, National Grid Foundation. "Through the program, along with inspiration from the university's exceptional scholar-athletes, and program components that recognize the most exceptional students, we hope to stimulate even greater performance in the classroom and community, immensely benefiting students in the Syracuse area."
