
#5 Orange Lose at #6 Notre Dame; Teams Will Play Again Saturday

The 5th-ranked Syracuse volleyball team lost for the first time this season in a 3-1 setback at sixth-ranked Notre Dame on Friday night. The Orange (2-1 overall, 2-1 ACC) rallied to win the third set after losing the first two, but the Irish (2-0 overall, 2-0 ACC) came back to win the match in the fourth set. ND's Charley Niego had 19 kills to lead the Irish. Syracuse and Notre Dame will play again on Saturday, October 3 at 6 p.m. (ACCNX).
Junior Polina Shemanova led Syracuse with 14 kills and junior Elena Karakasi recorded 46 assists. Viktoriia Lokhmanchuk set a career-high with nine kills. Freshman Lauren Hogan contributed a career-high 25 digs. Â
In the first set, the Orange battled back from a four-point deficit to even the score at 15 on a Karakasi kill. After the teams traded blows for six straight points the Irish used a 7-2 run to win the first set. Notre Dame took a 2-0 lead in the match with a second set win during which the Irish never trailed.
The Orange found their rhythm early in the third set and used a 7-2 run to open up the lead which they never relinquished in the 25-20 victory.
Early in the fourth set, the teams had seven ties as the Orange and Irish traded points leading to a 7-7 tie. Notre Dame scored the next three points to take a 10-7 lead and went on to win the set 25-21.
Closing In On 1,000
Orange junior Polina Shemanova tallied 14 digs to increase her career total to 974. She is 26 kills away from becoming the 17th player in program history to record 1,000 kills.

The Irish lead the series, 26-8. Saturday's match will be the 54th in the series.
